Sweet Potato Crisps are proof that some of the best snacks come from what we usually throw away. By using sweet potato skins, this recipe turns kitchen scraps into something crunchy, addictive, and incredibly easy to prepare.

It is a simple way to reduce food waste while creating a snack that works just as well on its own as it does alongside dips or meals.

Why Sweet Potato Crisps Make Sense

Sweet potato skins are packed with flavour and nutrients, and when dried properly, they crisp up beautifully in the oven. Baking instead of frying keeps the process fuss-free while still delivering that satisfying crunch.

This recipe shows how small changes in the kitchen can make a big difference.

Ingredients You'll Need

Fresh

  • Sweet potato skins

Pantry Staples

  • Cooking oil

  • Salt

Cooking Instructions

  1. Dry the sweet potato skins by placing them uncovered in the refrigerator overnight. This removes excess moisture and helps them crisp up evenly.

  2. Toss the dried skins lightly with cooking oil and salt until evenly coated.

  3. Spread them out in a single layer on a baking tray.

  4. Bake in a preheated oven at 160 to 180°C until the skins turn light, crisp, and golden.

  5. Remove from the oven and allow them to cool slightly before serving.

Serving Suggestions

Enjoy these crisps on their own as a snack, or serve them with yoghurt-based dips, sambal, or even alongside main dishes for added texture.

Tips to Make It Better

  • Drying matters: Skipping the overnight drying step will result in soggy crisps.

  • Even baking: Spread the skins out well so they do not overlap.

  • Season after baking: Add extra seasoning once they come out of the oven if needed.

A Simple Way to Snack Smarter

These sweet potato crisps are quick, practical, and satisfying. Once you try them, it becomes second nature to save your potato skins instead of discarding them.

Happy cooking!

The recipe is a collaboration between Museum of Food Singapore and Tingkat Takeaways.

Museum of Food Singapore (MOF) is a non-profit organisation focused on heritage food education. The museum explores everything related to food in Singapore, from preserving traditional tools and recipes used by earlier generations, to passing down culinary skills and knowledge, and examining the sustainability of heritage foods and the wider food industry.

MOF believes that Singapore’s food belongs to all its people, and that heritage food education should be accessible across all segments of society. Through this work, MOF aims to encourage a deeper sense of ownership, appreciation, and responsibility towards Singapore’s culinary heritage.
